Maggie’s wins Wood Awards’ Gold Award

23 November 2016

Eminent architect Foster + Partners’ Maggie’s at the Robert Parfett Building in Manchester has been crowned the Arnold Laver Gold Award winner at the Wood Awards 2016.

The project was declared the winner of winners at the Wood Awards ceremony at Carpenters’ Hall in London last night, with guests including architects, engineers, construction companies and timber suppliers.

The voting for Maggie’s was unanimous with the judges commenting that the remarkable structure “has brought together the best in engineering, fabrication and architecture”.

The Maggie’s centre winning project, which also scooped the Structural Award, features a lightweight lattice beam structure, using LVL from Metsa Wood. The diagonal arrangement of the trusses across the central spine provides stability to the roof without the need for additional elements.

Other winners included the Stihl Treetop Walkway in the commercial and leisure category; Stanbrook Abbey in the Education & Public Sector category; and the Portledge Rear Staircase for the Interiors prize.

Contour House was the Private winner; The Twist, an installation for last year’s Timber Expo, won the prize for Small Project and Ansty Plum was winner of the Existing Building Award.

The event’s major sponsors are the American Hardwood Export Council, the Carpenters’ Company, Wood for Good, TRADA and Arnold Laver.
