Adding structure

This year’s ttJ Awards will see new recognition for the structural timber systems sector, says ttJ editor Stephen Powney

The annual TTJ Awards continues to grow and expand its reach with recognition this year of another important part of the industry.

It’s impossible to escape the growth of timber construction methods in the UK. The number of units built in timber frame or with other wood-based build systems is increasing, with the government’s growing focus on off-site construction to meet housebuilding targets helping to build momentum.

Architects and builders are switching onto wood construction for a host of reasons: build speed, timber’s low carbon and sustainability credentials and a skills shortage in masonry on-site construction.

The TTJ Awards has often featured timber construction projects in the Achievement in Engineered Timber and Innovation categories but now we feel the time is right for it to have its own awards category recognising service excellence and product quality.

So this year we are launching the Structural Timber Systems Supplier of the Year Award in conjunction with the Structural Timber Association. This will recognise manufacturers of timber-based build systems, such as timber frame, cross-laminated timber (CLT), oak frame, as well as fabricators of roof trusses/ systems and engineered structural floor solutions.

TTJ will be contacting customers of the sector – principally builders and architects/ specifiers – to ask for their votes.

Acknowledgement of the structural timber systems industry follows last year’s addition of the joinery sector in the awards categories. Highlighting the importance of both the trading and manufacturing sides of the industry and bringing them together at the TTJ Awards on September 29 helps the event to become truly representative of the timber sector and give added value to networking opportunities on the day.
