Modified timbers fire-proofed at Dutch ecology centre

4 January 2012

The new home of the Netherlands Institute of Ecology features thermally-modified Plato WOOD treated with Arch Timber Protection’s fire retardants.

The timber and glass building uses Plato WOOD, produced from spruce, for external beams and cladding, as well as for interior timbers. Arch’s NON-COM Exterior, a polymer-based fire retardant, provides the surface spread of flame protection for the exterior wood

Interior timbers are also treated with Dricon, a water-based fire retardant. Both the timber and the Dricon treatment were supplied by Foreco Dalfsen.

The timbers for NON-CON Exterior protection had to be shipped to the UK in segments and treated by Arch before being sent back to the construction site in the Netherlands.

Arno van Oosten, Arch Timber Protection BV, said use of the NON-COM treatment in the UK added an extra step to the building process but by working directly with the timber supplier and builder, the process was kept as cost-effective as possible.
