Building product sales up in February

Builders’ merchant timber and joinery sales showed a strong performance in the latest data released in the Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI).

The data for February showed timber and joinery sales were up 6.6% compared with February last year. Plumbing, heating & electrical products (+7.9%) represented the only product category sector to achieve higher sales, while overall building sales were up 4.0% in February.

Other categories included ironmongery (+5%), kitchens & bathrooms (+4.6%) and workwear & safetywear (+4.5%), heavy building materials (+3.2%) and tools (-1.6%).

The Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) tracks builders’ merchants’ actual sales to builders and contractors using GfK’s Builders’ Merchant Point of Sale Tracking Data. The BMBI represents over 80% of the value of the builders' merchants' market.
