Canadian sawn lumber production rise

Canadian lumber production rose by 9.9% to 5.15 million m3 in September 2014, compared to August, according to Statistics Canada.

The figures represent the latest month for which figures are available.

The rise was 5.9% compared with September, 2013.

Statistics Canada said the increase brought the total output by the country's sawmills in the year to September to 44.95 million m3.

British Columbia (BC) led the way in September with sawmill production of 2.5 million m3, followed by Quebec at 1.18 million m3 and Alberta at 765,000m3.

In BC, 2.05 million m3 of spruce-pine-fir (SPF) was produced in September, while 175,000m3 of western hemlock and amabilis fir was produced. Douglas fir and western larch totalled 137,000m3.

Western red cedar production stats are not declared to meet the confidentiality requirements of the Statistics Act. But stock volumes are listed and totalled 165,000m3 in September.
