Cathedral finds space for Combilift

A Combilift 4-way fork lift was drafted in to help construction of the timber framework of a new Education Centre at Winchester Cathedral.

Inwood Developments was building the first green oak structure within the cathedral precincts for more than 100 years. The challenge was to move long lengths of timber around the site of the 26x9m barn-like structure.

Inwood, which uses a Combilift C4000 at its manufacturing site in Lewes, East Sussex, lent a demonstration machine to move cross beams up to 9m in length through the archway and along the narrow lanes.

The machine was able to fit underneath the relatively low roof rafters with centimetres to spare.

"Extra care was needed when moving around to avoid any damage. The multi-directional abilities of the Combilift have been absolutely perfect for the job," said Inwood director Edward Stenhouse.

The Combilift was able to work in restricted space
