US interest in cross-laminated timber (CLT) continues to grow, with two manufacturers announcing expansion plans.

Industry newsletter Random Lengths reports that Oregon-based DR Johnson plans to add a CLT line at its glulam factory. The company will work with Oregon State University and APA – The Engineered Wood Association to obtain independent certification.

Meanwhile SmartLam in Montana is looking for a larger facility to operate two production lines. At present its largest market for CLT is mats for oil drilling equipment but it the expansion will enable it to product custom panels for commercial projects.

In another sign of the US’s growing interest in CLT, last March Idaho Forest Group announced it had entered a joint venture with a partner in Austria to import CLT.
