Fire Door Safety Week wins Safety and Health Excellence award

Fire Door Safety Week 2017 has won Campaign of the Year at the Safety and Health Excellence Awards.

The award recognised the campaign’s success in highlighting the importance of fire door safety maintenance and five simple inspection checks that anyone can do to initiate positive change and improve a building’s fire safety.

Last year’s Fire Door Safety Week attracted its highest number of supporters, including 273 organisations from the social housing and private rental housing sectors, the construction supply chain, fire and building consultancies and fire and rescue services.

Among the high-profile supporters were London fire commissioner Dany Cotton, and Bill Grant MP who had 31 years’ fire brigade service.

The campaign, which is industry led, in partnership with the government’s Fire Kills campaign, was covered in the Daily Telegraph and The Mirror newspapers as well as Radio 5 Live, LBC and talkRADIO.

Accepting the award on behalf of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF), chief executive Iain McIlwee said the campaign’s success was down to the combined efforts of the BWF, BWF-Certifire scheme and the Fire Door Inspection Scheme team, “but more than anything it is testament to our members who have driven us to help raise awareness of concerns and help promote best practice, not just in the manufacture and supply, but also the installation and inspection/maintenance of fire doors.”

This year’s Fire Door Safety Week will be held from September 24-30.
