FSC extends in Indonesia

23 January 2013

A forest and logging unit has achieved further FSC certification for as much as 141,000m3 of logs from natural forest in Indonesia.

PT Dwimajaya Utama, a TFT (The Forest Trust) unit of the Dwima Group, is the 10th natural forest in Indonesia to be recognised and also the 10th for TFT.

The unit is a 127,300ha concession that supplies four main commercial species - bangkirai, red meranti, mersawa and keruing. It is also an important habitat for plants and animals, including the Bornean gibbon and clouded leopard.

A spokesperson for PT Dwimajaya Utama said he expected the certification to result in higher sales volumes into the EU and Australia. "Demand for certified FSC timber is far greater than the supply available," he said.

Work will now begin on the neighbouring Carus concession covering 72,170ha.
