ISC 2020 registration now open

13 August 2020

The European Timber Trade Federation (ETTF) and the European Organisation of the Sawmill Industry (EOS) have announced the opening of the registration for the virtual edition of the International Softwood Conference (ISC) 2020, which will take place on October 8 2020 from 12.00 to 16.20 CET.

The ISC is a world leading conference for producers and traders of softwood products; typically, more than 180 experts from four continents join the annual meeting. This year, due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the ISC will be hosted as an online-only conference for the first time.

The 2020 ISC discussion will be focused on macro-economic impacts and change in timber consumption and production caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, in Europe as well as in key timber markets such as China, the US, Japan and the MENA region, just to mention a few. The event is timely as the pandemic has triggered a global economic slowdown with consequences also for the timber market. High level speakers will focus on the repercussions of the Covid-19 outbreak on the timber market and the wider economy, as well as provide forecasts on what a post-pandemic market will look like.

The conference will end with a presentation on the bark beetle outbreaks in British Columbia and in central Europe. Climate change is allowing some native pests to breed more frequently, and the threat posed by insects and pathogens appears to be growing in forests. According to the most recent data, pests are responsible for damaging 35 million ha of forest around the world every year.

Presentations will be pre-recorded while the debate will be live. Overall, the quality and feel of the event will be just as professional as previous ISCs – just online.
