James Jones completes new visitor building at Lockerbie

22 April 2021

James Jones & Sons has competed the construction of a new visitor centre at its flagship Lockerbie site.

The building will provide better facilities for the high number of visitors James Jones normally receives (pre-pandemic), including customer groups, customer training courses, academic institutions and industry events. The building will also provide additional office accommodation.

The building was constructed using as much James Jones’s product as possible and had to have a low carbon footprint from a combination of a high embodied carbon figure, a low energy heating and ventilation system and high levels of insulation.

James Jones & Sons held a design competition between two architectural firms and the winning team was Konishi Gaffney from Edinburgh, led by Kieran Gaffney.

“We are really pleased with the new building,” said Rob MacKenna, general manager at the Lockerbie site. “The striking design and innovative use of solid and engineered timber products are a great example of how timber can be used to deliver high quality office and meeting areas.”

The project will be covered in more detail in TTJ’s focus on timber in construction in the July/August issue.
