New TP distribution centre opens at Tilbury

26 March 2015

Sheet materials and carcassing will be the initial timber products stocked as part of Travis Perkins’ (TP) new Range Centre at the Port of Tilbury – launched by chancellor George Osborne fresh from unveiling the government’s March budget.

It forms part of an ambitious new expansion programme by TP, which will see 4,000 new jobs created and 400 new branches (TP merchant branches, Wickes, Toolstation, Benchmarx and plumbing/heating sites) opened in the next four years, the majority outside London and the southeast.

The centre at London Distribution Park, Windrush Road, is one of four new Range Centres being opened across the country, allowing all TP branches to offer next day delivery on any heavyside product.

“There’s also going to be more timber ranges stocked, but that’s still to be decided,” a TP spokesperson told TTJ.

An 81,473m2 centre opened in Cardiff last December, joining an existing one at Warrington. Tilbury will open in July 2015, while Coventry will have a site by June 2016. More 500 jobs are being created by the Range Centre initiative.

“Travis Perkins’ ability to create 4,000 new jobs reflects confidence in our businesses, the markets we operate in and the UK economy as whole,” said TP chief executive John Carter.

“This confidence is supported by a number of actions taken by the government over the past two years, including the new Help to Buy ISA, that are continuing to support construction activity and improvements in consumer confidence.”
