An investigation has been launched after a timber yard was set alight in Ashton-In-Makerfield near Wigan.

A timber yard operated by McVeigh Parker on Park Lane Industrial Estate, Wigan Road, Bryn was affected by a large fire overnight on March 18, with up to 40 firefighters in attendance.

The fire service reported that a 50m x 50m outdoor storage area of timber was affected, while Highways England closed the nearby northbound slip road at Junction 25 of the M6 motorway due to smoke spreading in the area.

Manchester Police said at around 1am two offenders were seen setting fire to a large pile of timber on the site. A white vehicle was seen in the area at the time.

Officers are treating it as arson and are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen anything around the time of the fire.
