Timber Expo gathers momentum

24 July 2015

Timber Expo has been buoyed by TRADA teaming up with the Architectural Association’s (AA) School of Architecture to create a wooden pavilion for this year’s show.

And Metsä Wood is also the latest confirmed exhibitor for the October 6-8, show, part of UK Construction Week at Birmingham NEC.

The wooden pavilion, to be built from 4mm and 6mm birch plywood supplied by TRADA member Hanson Plywood, will be called The Twist and will explore the bending and twisting capacity of timber by integrating structural and spatial performance into one elegant architectural solution. Metsä Wood is an industry heavyweight making a notable presence at Timber Expo. The company said having the opportunity to meet its partners and customers face-to-face at an event like Timber Expo was “absolutely vital”.

The company will also give a practical Toolbox Talk on Spanning the Distance in Engineered Wood Products. Metsä Wood’s head of technical, engineering and design Frank Werling, will discuss how the introduction of EWP BIM objects can help facilitate the specification of timber as a viable alternative to steel.

Timber Expo organisers Media 10 said leading decision makers and buyers from the likes of Willmott Dixon, Zaha Hadid Architects, Redrow, Skanska, Barratt Developments, Lend Lease, Laing O'Rourke, Berkeley Group, Kier, Taylor Wimpey, Balfour Beatty, Accord Group, Farrells, Galliford Try and Paramount Construction were among those already registered for Timber Expo.

“Timber Expo provides those in the timber industry with a vital opportunity – all the manufacturers, suppliers, specifiers, contractors and distributors coming together over the course of the event,” said Nathan Garnett, show director for UK Construction Week.

Meanwhile UK Construction Week has appointed an advisory panel consisting of TV architect George Clarke, Barratt Developments’ CEO Mark Clare and BRE CEO Dr Peter Bonfield amongst others.
