TIMCON forum to address sector challenges

5 March 2018

The Timber Packaging and Pallet Confederation (TIMCON) is to chair a members’ forum on March 14, that will focus on the latest challenges for the sector – namely shortages in the supply of small logs caused by an on-going combination of high global demand and general supply scarcities.

The meeting will be held at the Manchester Marriott hotel and will include updates on the state of the UK pallet and packing market. The panel of speakers will include Andrew Heald, technical director of Confor, speaking on UK timber supply; Hikki Vidgren of Pöyry Consulting, speaking on global timber flows; and Guy Watt of John Clegg Consulting. UK and Irish sawmillers and timber importers will also attend the meeting.

“We have monitored the escalating demand and supply issues for many months and our industry now faces a perfect storm of reduced inputs and higher prices for manufacturers and our customers,” said Stuart Hex, TIMCON general secretary.

“It is crucial that our industry stays well organised and that we communicate with one another and with our customers to mitigate the effects of this situation,” he continued.
