W Howard introduces biodegradable wrapping

4 April 2019

MDF mouldings manufacturer W Howard has responded to growing concern over plastic packaging waste by moving to 100% biodegradable wrapping for all its delivered products.

Its move comes as UK charity WRAP (The Waste and Resources Action Programme), estimates around 40% of all the plastic consumed in the UK is used in packaging, and this generates around 2.4 million tonnes of waste every year.

W Howard said it spent months researching alternatives to play its part in reversing the plastic waste problem.

Its solution was to switch all plastic wrapping to 100% biodegradable material KR-OXO, which degrades in the open air in as little as 60 days dependent upon formulation.

The company estimates its decision will remove around 16 tonnes of non-biodegradable plastic from potentially ending up in landfill sites each year.

“The building materials industry urgently needs to find new, greener ways of working to minimise its impact on the environment,” said Simon Fleet, W Howard group commercial director.
