Timber washed ashore from the grounded cargo ship Kodima is being removed from a Cornish beach to be pulped.

DRS Demolitions National has been contracted by the ship’s insurers to remove thousands of cubic metres of softwood planking on the beach at Whitsand Bay. It is using excavators and other large tracked vehicles to take the wood away.

Nicholas Brown, spokesperson for the ships managers Inok NV, said the clear up could take ‘weeks and weeks’.

He said: ‘The public took away quite a lot but compared to what’s there it was negligible.’

Mr Brown said the woodpulp may be used for fuel at a local energy plant.

The Kodima was taking the wood from Sweden to Libya (TTJ February 9) when it ran aground during fierce gales.

A 1km exclusion zone has been placed on the vessel by the Maritime and Coast-guard Agency after jetskiers approached the ship.
