New sawmilling courses, including a distance learning NVQ level 2 in sawmilling, have been developed at Barony College, Dumfries.
As well as enabling individuals to achieve a nationally recognised qualification, the open learning pack provides flexibility to timber processing businesses and allows training suited to industry work patterns.
The award is made up of seven units covering topics including timber processing, health and safety, machine operation and processing of co-products.
European Social Fund (ESF) support is available. Ian Murchie from Howie Forest Products‘ sawmill at Dalbeattie said: “The 75% ESF subsidy on short courses has made training much more affordable and helps us achieve our investment in the workforce.”
A course in supervisory skills has also been developed and the new programmes are aimed at large and small sawmills based in Lowland Scotland.
