Roof truss and engineered timber floor specialist, Donaldson Timber Engineering launched a structural insulated roofing system (SIRS) at Interbuild. The hybrid roofing system, which has been certified by TRADA and uses BBA-approved components, “easily complies with Part L”, says the company and is “a prime example of modern methods of construction”.

General manager Brian Welsh said SIRS was developed in order to rise to a variety of challenges presented by construction today, including increased build speed and health and safety requirements.

The system features floor cassettes, forming a quick and safe working platform, pre-manufactured dormers and window openings, structural insulated panels (SIPs) set between trusses and increased truss spacing (to 2.4m). The system is designed for crane erection, thus reducing manual handling and the structure can be wind- and watertight in one day, ready for other trades.

“With the exception of the SIPs panels, the system brings together components already developed in-house by Donaldson,” said Mr Welsh. “We’ve launched it at Interbuild to see how the market feels about it and we’ve had lots of enquiries from self-builders, architects, engineers and some developers.”
