Across the timber industry, a fundamental shift is under way. Customers are no longer just asking about price and availability– they’re demanding proof of provenance and increased due diligence. What was once considered a “nice to have” has rapidly become a commercial necessity.

Recent global disruptions have already exposed supply chain vulnerabilities, but now UK businesses face a new challenge: the EU Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR). As the EUDR comes into force, UK businesses face new obligations to prove their products are deforestation-free.

While the regulation primarily targets commodities like timber, soy, palm oil, and cattle, its scope and due diligence requirements are far-reaching. For UK companies, especially those in the forestry and timber sectors, Grown in Britain (GiB) certification offers a strategic advantage in navigating EUDR compliance.

You may be thinking, “I don’t export, so it doesn’t affect me”, but unless you know for sure that the timber you trade stays in the UK, then at some point you may well be asked for due diligence and geolocation data (precise location information) for the timber that passes through your business. All businesses have a responsibility to carry out due diligence checks on the timber they buy, regardless of whether they are aiming to comply with EUDR requirements. GiB certification can support your business by independently verifying the sustainability, legality and location of the timber you trade.

UNDERSTANDING THE EUDR

The EUDR came into force on June 29, 2023 and has two key deadlines for compliance: December 30, 2025 for large and medium companies and June 30, 2026 for micro and small enterprises. It mandates that products placed on the EU market must not be linked to deforestation or forest degradation.

Businesses must:

  • Provide geolocation data for production plots.
  • Demonstrate compliance with local laws, including environmental and human rights standards.
  • Submit a Due Diligence Statement (DDS) via the EU’s information system.

Non-compliance can result in fines up to 4% of annual turnover, product confiscation, and market exclusion, although implementation details are still being refined.

THE ROLE OF CERTIFICATION IN EUDR COMPLIANCE

While certification is not an automatic guarantee of EUDR compliance, it can significantly streamline the due diligence process, helping businesses organise supply chain data, assess risks and demonstrate sustainable sourcing.

Grown in Britain is developing an EUDR toolkit that will build on our existing certification to help deliver EUDR compliance for certificate holders.

HOW GiB CERTIFICATION SUPPORTS EUDR COMPLIANCE

Grown in Britain is a UK-based certification scheme that promotes sustainably managed British woodlands and traceable timber supply chains. We work at every stage of the forest product supply chain to support the use of UK timber. Our key differentiator? Proof of origin.

While many schemes certify forest management practices, only GiB verifies actual timber origin – the critical link which enables products to enter genuinely traceable, low-risk supply chains.

Timber choices today shape tomorrow’s forests

GiB certification addresses EUDR requirements in five key ways:

  1. Local and legal sourcing: GiB-certified products are sourced from UK woodlands that meet legal and sustainable management standards. This naturally meets the EUDR’s requirement for compliance with local laws and legal harvesting practices.
  2. Geolocation and traceability: GiB certification includes detailed records of woodland locations and timber provenance. Adding geolocation data is a natural next step and can be used to meet EUDR’s requirements for supply chain transparency.
  3. Risk mitigation: By sourcing from UK woodlands, businesses reduce exposure to deforestation risks. The UK has a low deforestation risk, and GiB certification provides documented evidence of sustainable practices from UK Forestry Standard-compliant woodlands, aiding in risk assessment and mitigation. GiB’s due diligence template will simplify the production of the necessary statements required by the EUDR. DDS are required to be kept for five years and must be uploaded to the European Deforestation Due Diligence Statement Registry.
  4. Supply chain confidence: GiB certification helps UK businesses assure EU partners that their timber products meet sustainability and legality standards and that the timber is from a low-risk country. This makes DDS submissions easier and enhances trust across borders.
  5. Reputation and market access: Using GiB-certified products demonstrates a commitment to environmental stewardship, which can enhance brand reputation and ensure continued access to EU markets under the EUDR framework.

MAKING EUDR WORK FOR YOUR BUSINESS

While GiB certification alone does not exempt businesses from EUDR obligations, it provides a robust foundation for compliance. By integrating GiB into their sourcing and documentation strategies, UK businesses can simplify due diligence, reduce risk, and position themselves as leaders in sustainable trade.

As the EUDR deadline approaches, leveraging certifications like Grown in Britain is a proactive step toward compliance, resilience, and responsible business.

SHAPING TOMORROW’S FORESTS

The trend toward becoming Grown in Britain certified reflects a broader transformation in how businesses are thinking about supply chains, risk management, and competitive advantage. Smart companies aren’t viewing certification as a cost of doing business – they’re using it as a tool for market differentiation and strategic positioning.

With regulatory pressures mounting, customer expectations rising, and supply chain vulnerabilities exposed by recent global events, the question isn’t whether to pursue certification. The question is whether to choose a certification that delivers commercial value alongside sustainability credentials.

The UK timber processing sector is poised to scale up and create high-value products that compete effectively with imports. Getting the certification framework right – connecting forests to processors to end users through verified, efficient supply chains – is one of the essential pieces of this puzzle.

Your timber choices today really do shape tomorrow’s forests, and they shape your future opportunities too. For that, you need Grown in Britain: trusted certification, sustainable solutions.
