The installation of a Morbidelli Author CNC machining centre has speeded up door production at Richmond Joiners and Builders Ltd and allowed the company to take on sub-contract work.

The Oldham-based company decided to upgrade due to a steadily growing influx of local authority orders for its Richmondoors – pre-finished, high security solid hardwood external door sets.

Previously, the firm was using an overhead manual router and traditional machines. Now, production time has speeded up from 50 minutes for an average door to inside 20 minutes.

The Morbidelli, supplied through Bramley-based Machine Sales Ltd, works for less than half a week, so Richmond approached other joiners, cabinet makers and furniture manufacturers about doing sub-contract work for them. This has resulted in a “considerable” level of additional work.

The machine, a £70,000 investment, is equipped with a six-position tool changer and a fixed horizontal router. Five different process are carried out in the horizontal and vertical planes.
