A joinery workshop based in Sussex has speeded up operations by installing an SCM Superset XL five head planer-moulder.

Billingshurst-based Jameson Joinery, which started 18 years ago as a supplement to Robert Jameson’s agricultural business, had found that the long re-setting time on its existing four-sided planer-moulder was too time-consuming for small batch runs.

With a growing business including the supply of timber frame buildings, stairs, windows, doors, conservatories, gates and furniture, Mr Jameson decided a new machine was needed to cope with large oak sections, provide short change-over times, improve accuracy and meet current and future safety requirements.

He said the SCM Superset’s set-up system incorporates a digital measuring stand which automatically adjusts the feed rollers, chip breaker and pad pressure, saving the operator a number of fiddly adjustments.

The machine features individual large horsepower motors for maximum power delivery during heavy cuts and two vertical supports to the feed beam to guarantee rigidity and reliability of the feed system even when machining large hardwood sections. The joinery is using it to run up to 9in wide 30mm deep moulded coving sections.

An additional specification was SCM’s microprocessor control which quickly changes the working section size of the machine, useful when one off planed all round sections are run.
