Timber Expo: CoedCymru promotes Welsh timber

It does this by facilitating the use of Welsh-grown timber and was demonstrating two of its projects - the Ty Unnos building system and end grain tile flooring.

The Endgrain Project adds value to timber less than 30cm across, typically used as firewood, and gives it a new lease of life.

Ty Unnos, which delivers a weathertight structure on the first day of the build, is a joint project with the Welsh School of Architecture, wood scientists at Bangor University, Cowley Timberworks, and the private sector in Wales, including Pontrilas Timber, Kenton Jones Joinery and Elements Europe.

"We've been showing the componentry and the finished houses and school buildings [via video] and demonstrating that, with ingenuity, you can use low-density plantation softwoods in structural components," said Coed Cymru's David Jenkins.

"I think it's the first time a home-grown softwood product has proceeded from a research project to a fully commercial project through private industry support."
