The investment, which follows the signing of a new 15-year agreement with NSL, will see the construction of a 4,300m2 extension to the shed currently used by the company at the port’s Alexandra Dock.

A customer of ABP hull since 2000, NSL has seen constant growth in trade. In 2003, ABP invested £700,000 in the construction of a 6,300m2 shed to enable NSL to expand its Humber operations and extend its range of operations, including the provision of value-added services.

Construction work on the extension is expected to start later this month and it will become operational by the end of the year.

“ABP Hull has long held the title of the UK’s largest timber-handling port and we are always keen to find opportunities to consolidate our position,” said Matthew Kennerley, ABP port director for Hull & Goole.

NSL managing director Stephen Tomlinson said the investment would enable the company to supply increasing volumes of softwood, primarily from Russia, to the timber trade on a national basis, by ensuring that the goods were fully looked after in the improved undercover storage.

“This extra facility will also help us expand our environmental stocks of Forest Stewardship Council and Programme for the Endorsmeent of Forest Certification accredited softwood,” he added.
