Accoya modified wood cladding has been installed at the Isle of Mull and Iona Community Trust’s new An Roth Community Enterprise Centre to withstand the island’s harsh weather conditions.
International Timber supplied the exterior cladding for the upper levels of the build, an £800,000 construction project by TSL Contractors Ltd.
International Timber advised the architects how to ensure the cladding could deliver a long life-span, including recommending two coats of Wood Guard. A blue shade was selected to complement the white render used on the lower level.
“Accoya is a popular choice for builds such as this,” said David Hogg, product manager at International Timber.
“It offers a practical alternative to tropical hardwoods that is sustainable, durable, stable and maintains a high standard of quality. It also uses fast growing timber from certified sources which provides a more environmental alternative.”
“We chose Accoya cladding due to its hard-wearing properties and the fact that it could be delivered to site with a factory finish,” said architect Shauna Cameron.
The centre will be used to provide permanent and temporary office space for island visitors.
The Accoya wood modification process uses acetylation technology on fast-growing softwood to give the wood the properties equivalent to the most durable tropical hardwoods.
The Building Research Establishment has rated Accoya in above ground use with a 60-year service life, achieving the highest possible British Standard durability rating class 1.
