Cherry wood interiors provided a homely touch for sailors fighting the world’s largest oceans in what is billed as ‘the world’s toughest race’, the BT Global Challenge.
American black cherry was used extensively in the common quarters of the 12 identical 72ft round-the-world yachts which, after sailing 35,000 miles, recently sailed into Southampton after finishing the Challenge.
Richard Chennery, skipper of the Quadstone, said: ‘The cherry wood was warm, made the boat feel liveable and performed well considering the wear and tear of such a trip.’
