Asia Pulp & Paper Company (APP) wants to turn 76,000ha of its forests into a conservation area.
Indonesia-based APP plans to invest around US$7m in the area and up to US$50m in total to achieve its sustainability action plan, which covers creation of conservation areas, community development and timber tracking.
National forestry laws stipulate that industrial forest owners need to earmark 20% of their land for conservation and development of indigenous trees and greenbelts.
APP, which already has some conservation areas, manages about 900,000ha of forest in Riau and Jambi.
