An armed protection unit has been set up to protect the forests in the Central African Republic.
Timber is the government’s largest source of revenue and the protection unit will deploy field agents to verify that the registers of timber firms accurately reflect their operations. The squad will also ensure that timber firms do not fell trees in unauthorised areas and that they pay taxes to the government.
