Sponsored by CITB-Construction Skills, the Apprentice of the Year Award is open to any apprentice in the joinery sector and "recognises outstanding achievement, commitment and personal development".

"Part of our reason for relaunching the award is to help drive interest in our WITForum, and to map careers of participants," said BWF chief executive Ian McIlwee. "We also want to underline the commitment of joinery to training, even in today’s tough market.

The industry has the highest density of apprentices of any specialist trade and is the second most successful in drawing down funds for training from ConstructionSkills; £1.07 per £1 of levy paid, against an average of 50 pence."

The other BWF award, sponsored by Timbmet, is for technical excellence and innovation.

"Times may be tough, but there is still some innovative stuff going on in our industry and we want to help highlight that to the wider construction products market," said Mr McIlwee.

The deadline for both categories is November 2 and the winners will be announced by BRE chief executive Dr Peter Bonfield at the BWF annual dinner on November 16 at Lords Cricket Ground.
