Balcas Timber has been fined £50,000 for a breach of health and safety laws that led to a worker’s death.
The Enniskillen-based timber company pleaded guilty at Omagh Crown Court in a case brought by the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland. It was also ordered to pay costs of £6,623.
In 2006 Michael Lukan, a maintenance fitter, died when the conveyor he was repairing moved, causing him to receive fatal crush injuries.
Subsequent enquiries by HSENI found that Balcas Timber has failed to take reasonable steps to protect the health and safety of its employees.
After the hearing Brian Pryce, investi-gating inspector with HSENI said: “It is vital that all companies properly identify and address hazards within the work place, and implement systems to minimise and control risks.
“These systems need to be communicated to the workforce, implemented, maintained, and updated when necessary.”
