While many companies now pledge to use timber and wood products only from certified sustainable sources Bauwerk Parkett AG is aiming to go one step further.
The Swiss parquet flooring manufacturer, a newcomer to the UK market, will examine the question of low pay and child labour when deciding with which countries it will do business.
John Buchanan of Bauwerk Parkett (UK) Ltd said: ‘We are not positioning ourselves to destabilise labour markets, where incomes are low and families rely on contributions from adults and children alike. What we are doing is looking at suppliers in the context of their national economic conditions.
‘If we see profiteering at the expense of local labour,’ he continued, ‘then we would have to seriously consider future trading relations with them.’
