The Inside Out programme about the grounding of the MV Danio, which had been carrying logs from Perth to Antwerp, comes as the Maritime and Coastguard Agency carries out its investigation into the incident.
The ship was stranded on rocks for 12 days before being freed by another vessel. The BBC programme interviewed a coastguard surveyor and the ship’s owner about what happened on March 16 this year.
The surveyor suggested there was a serious failing in the ship’s safety management system, in that the bridge watch alarm was switched off, while the owner believes human error had caused the accident.
BBC viewers heard a telephone interview with the former captain in which he said the first mate had made a statement saying he had fallen asleep.
The MCA said it was still carrying out its investigation so would not be commenting on possible causes.
