A lightweight stressed-skin plywood roof has been specified to cover a new visitor centre on the Scottish island of Bute designed by architects Munkenbeck and Marshall.

Only 780mm deep, the 35m long roof oversails the building. It is made up of 6mm plywood ribs at 400mm centres glued and screwed to upper and lower layers of plywood to form a monocoque stucture.

A double thickness of 9mm plywood was used for the upper layer and a 6mm double thickness for the lower. Panels were laser cut in the factory and assembled on site, with insulation and waterproofing laid on top.

The ground floor walls are clad with overlapping iroko boards.
