The new Western Marina development in Beirut, Lebanon, features 7,000m2 of African hardwood decking.
Project construction manager High Point Rendel, which has an office in Birmingham, said the quantity of well-seasoned ekki was not commercially available so a design was based on the maximum available 4m sawn length and delivered green from Ghanaian sawmills. The use of green timber meant special allowances were made in the design for shrinkage.
The decking forms a 10m wide walkway to the quays on three sides of the marina, a former refuse tip.
