Compared to the first quarter, average lumber transaction prices increased by US$10 per thousand board feet, with operating costs down by US$19 per thousand board feet.

Despite the improved performance of the company’s lumber operations, the South Carolina business said that it is continuing to “curtail lumber production as a result of soft demand”.

Overall, Bowater, which owns 10 North American sawmills, 708,000 acres of timberland in in the US and has cutting rights to 28 million acres of timber in Canada, reported a net loss of US$62.6m for the second quarter of 2007.
