B&Q says it has become the first retailer to source 100% of its wood from responsible sources.

The DIY retailing giant also announced fourth quarter sales of £835m, almost identical to a year ago, with December sales affected by the adverse weather.

B&Q said it reached the 100% responsible souring milestone this month, up from just over 90% in 2010.

B&Q has worked to achieve the 100% mark for the last 20 years since it was challenged by environment groups on the sourcing of its wood.

The company now has one of the largest chain of custody certifications under both the FSC and PEFC schemes.

It has some 16,000 products which contain wood, including sawn timber, flooring, doors, decking, fencing, sheds, garden furniture, windows and plywood.

“Today is a milestone for B&Q as we show our support for responsibly managed forests,” said B&Q director of corporate social responsibility Matt Sexton.

“Each of our 330 stores are covered by our own FSC and PEFC chain of custody certification and customers can see on their receipts which products are certified under which scheme, as well as looking at the label on the timber product.”
