BSW Timber has announced a £6m investment in its operations at Carlisle.
The investment will boost capacity and productivity at the site in a bid to meet rapidly increasing customer demand, with home-grown timber demand reaching an all-time high.
Improvements will include a new planer and grader line, allowing for increased capacity, improved customer service and the ability to provide a wider product range.
A biomass boiler will replace gas and oil for heating the kilns, while a Kalfass multi-head cross-cut machine will increase productivity and operational efficiency to the pallet industry.
New high-pressure treatment facilities from Arch Timber Protection will follow in late summer in 2012 to aid productivity during the fencing season.
“This major investment underlines BSW’s position as a dynamic forward-thinking business and reinforces our ambitions to grow the market for British timber,” said Tony Hackney, BSW chief executive officer.
Mr Hackney said he was confident that the market would recover and the significant financial investment would further ensure BSW was best-placed to service the demands of customers and improve site efficiencies.
