BSW Timber has revived its interest in modified wood technology as part of its wide-ranging product development programme.

Intelligent Wood Technologies Ltd is the name of the division within BSW looking at the modification of softwood to give performance properties similar to tropical hardwood.

BSW started exploring wood modification towards the end of last year by setting up Intelligent Wood. Since then Roy Tilleard and Justin Martin, who were the executive chairman and chief finance officer of the former modified wood company Kurawood Ltd, have been brought on board as additional directors of Intelligent Wood.

“These are very early days in any discussion about BSW Timber’s investment in new products,” said a spokesperson for BSW Timber.

“Our product development team are constantly looking at innovative options and partnerships, and, at this initial stage, we are simply exploring a wide range of future possibilities.”

BSW Timber was formerly the sole UK supplier for the Accoya modified wood brand but ended the arrangement in 2009 to focus on developing new home-grown timber products. The strength of the euro at the time was also believed to have made importing the product uneconomical.
