More than half of housebuilders surveyed by the NHBC Foundation say they are most likely to use timber frame when building high level houses to meet the government’s Code for Sustainable Homes.
The report, Zero carbon: what does it mean for homeowners and housebuilders?, found that 56% of builders were most likely to use timber frame, with 78% having considered it. Some 49% said they were most likely to use brick and block.
About 13% of builders are currently looking at both construction methods, as well as lightweight panel systems and panel system masonry. A quarter are considering three build types and a further quarter looking at two.
The report said builders’ apparent conservatism in favouring established build methods was echoed by homeowners visiting the BRE’s Innovation Park as well as in the main body of NHBC Foundation’s research.
