Timber importer C Leary & Co is to exclusively market Equatoria Teak as an alternative to Burmese teak.
The African product, produced by the Equatorial Teak Company, is being aimed at the marine decking industry as an answer to problems faced by yacht manufacturers caused by sanctions on Burma.
C Leary managing director Simon Kloos said the product will be certified, with Verified Progress certification leading to Forest Stewardship Council certification.
“The marine industry is experiencing an unprecedented level of uncertainty caused by EU sanctions banning the direct import of Burma teak, with boat builders increasingly concerned about the security of supply and the public acceptability of Burma teak,” he said.
Wattsons Decking has already sampled and run test decking using Equatorial Teak.
