The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) insists that timber windows are increasing their market share against PVCu, despite the findings of a new research report.
The BWF’s comments follow a report by Cheltenham-based AMA Research Ltd which claims that PVCu has about 90% of the market and that timber “continues to lose share” to plastic in the public sector.
Adam Frankling, product manager for the BWF’s Timber Window Accreditation Scheme, said: “We are talking to members, local authorities and housebuilders and would say that timber is starting to increase its market share.

“The public sector, especially local authorities, is leading the way in turning back to timber. They place a lot on the whole life cost of the product and sustainability.”
AMA’s report said PVCu is the preferred replacement framing material for housing associations but some are specifying timber on environmental grounds. However, it added that timber continues to dominate the entrance door market.
