The British Woodworking Federation‘s (BWF) timber training programme attracted 143 delegates representing 16 joinery companies during 2005.

BWF technical officer Chris Addison said a second training module launched earlier this year covering treatments and coatings had been a “resounding success” and a third module covering sustainability would be rolled out next February.

He said: “At the request of individual companies, the BWF has been able to run the two modules as a package on site, for minimum disruption and maximum impact.”

The federation started the training programme in 2003 to plug gaps in the knowledge of those working in the joinery sector.

Treatments training deals with timber structure, types of treatment, health and safety, plus the supplier’s warranty. Coatings sessions cover type and constituents of coatings, water- and solvent-based systems and application techniques.

The first module provides an understanding of softwoods and hardwoods.
