The certified area covers certification to ISO 14001 environmental management standard (ISO), Canada’s national sustainable forest management standard (CSA), the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).
ISO certified forests represent the largest certified coverage with 149.3 million ha, followed by CSA forests (72.5 million ha), SFI (31.1 million ha) and FSC (16.6 million ha).
The annual allowable cut of FSC timber is 7.3 million m3, CSA (54.4 million m3) and SFI (39.5 million m3).
Patrick Cooper, Canada Wood UK’s market development co-ordinator, said Canada had the largest certified forest area in the world. He said certified timber was available to meet market demand, except in certain FSC hardwoods, where demand exceeded supply.
