The Canadian government is reportedly seeking to pressurise the US into accepting a recent ruling by a North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) panel in the softwood lumber dispute.
Canada’s Globe and Mail said the government was planning to file a NAFTA motion asking trade arbitrators to reject an American bid for more time before acting on the panel’s decision.
The NAFTA panel found the US’s calculation of part of its softwood lumber duties on Canadian imports was illegal under US law.
The American government missed a deadline to compy with the ruling, citing the need to clarify elements of the decision.
