Canada-based Sinclair Group Forest Products has announced it will not resume operations at its Winton Global Lumber business.
Winton’s primary market was dimension lumber for the US, Canadian and Japanese markets. The downturn in the US housing market since 2008, with falling lumber volumes and prices, hit Winton heavily.
“These market forces, combined with future fibre uncertainty and the projected capital investment required to regain competitiveness, led to the decision to permanently close Winton Global Lumber operations,” said Prince George-based Sinclair Group.
“We are confident this decision will better position our company to compete globally, preserve the long-term viability of our operations, and ensure job security for our 600 employees,” it added.
