Canfor Corporation is seeking at least US$250m damages from the US government for imposing duties on its softwood lumber exports.
Canfor is at least the third Canadian company to file a claim, the others being Doman Industries Ltd and Tembec Incorporated
The claim has been filed in connection with Canfor’s action under chapter 11 of the North American Free Trade Agreement. A tribunal will now be organised, with the US government asked to mount a defence.
The whole process could take up to two years to resolve.
