Western red cedar shingles from John Brash & Co are being used for the roofs of a spectacular new domed sports academy in Scunthorpe.

The £21m building, which was commissioned by North Lincolnshire Council and has become known as The Pods, comprises five linked geodesic glulam and timber-framed domes.

The designers’ calculations showed that the lightweight shingles provided one of the few ways to create the very shallow angles created by the “free-form” dome design. Masonry would have been too heavy.

The building was designed by architects Andrew Wright Associates and S&P. The main contractor was timber construction specialist B&K Structures and the roofing contractor was Advanced Roofing.

Due for completion in the summer, the structure will house swimming pools, a sports hall, gym and dance studio.
