A drive to increase the use of wood and wood based products has been announced by the president of CEI-Bois, the European Confederation of Woodworking Industries, Bo Borgström.
Speaking at the 49th general assembly of CEI-Bois in Spain he said he wanted to lead European woodworking industries in a common aim and make wood and wood based products the main products used for structural construction and home and office furnishing by 2010.
He warned that 2002 was likely to be tough for the industry because of a weakening of the world economy, but said recovery was expected towards the end of the year.
Meanwhile CEI-Bois is working with partners in the Forest Based Industries on a study into the public’s perception of the woodworking sector. The study will help the industry define its future communication strategy.
The confederation is continuing its efforts to have barriers to trade for wood and wood products removed and is promoting the economic and ecological advantages of wood. It is also focusing on training and education in the woodworking sector.
As part of its 50th anniversary this year, CEI-Bois is organising a European Wood Day in Brussels on March 20. The event will form part of European Wood Week which will include presentations on research activities, promotion and marketing, economic forecasts and environmental aspects of the use of wood.
