CEI-BOIS (the European Confederation of Woodworking Industries) presented its 2008/09 action plan during its general assembly held in Portugal.

The plan is based on three key strategic areas – competitiveness, security in wood supply and the contribution of the woodworking industries to a better climate.

On competitiveness, CEI-Bois will follow international policy developments closely and act upon them when required, as well as gaining support for key R&D activities from public authorities. The sector had to invest in its future too, CEI-Bois added, by identifying opportunities and making funds available.

Security in wood supply is regarded as “key” to the future development of the industry, with CEI-Bois supporting activities which meanv availability is guaranteed for all market players.

CEI-BOIS said the third strategic area – contribution of the sector to a better climate, will involve promoting the positive role of wood in mitigating climate change to a wider audience.

During the general assembly, Professor Dr António Castro Guerra, Portuguese secretary of state for economy and innovation warned about “severe challenges” posed by increased competition for raw material from the biomass industry.

He said the current policy of subsidising renewable energy production had led to cost and price discrepancies, difficulties in accessing raw material and has undermined environmental benefits offered by the woodworking industries.
