The country is working to grow its timber production base to around 13.3 million ha by 2015, producing at least 200 million m3 of logs, through developing fast-growing and high-yield economic forests.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government has been accused of contributing to deforestation and timber smuggling from Russia, Myanmar and some South-east Asian countries through its ban on logging in its own natural forests.

The claim has been refuted by China which said its logging ban poses no threat to forest protection in other countries. SFA spokesperson Cao Qongyao described the ban as a responsible approach to ecological protection which would bring benefits to the whole world.

China also plans to impose tough border controls to combat illegal timber trade, and has set up co-operation schemes with neighbouring countries to crack down on timber smuggling.
